Cookie policy
No optional cookies are set unless you allow them. Here is everything the site stores, and why.

In short
Right now no measurement tag is switched on, so this site sets no cookies at all. The cookie message on your first visit simply tells you so. The site does use your browser's local storage to remember the steps you tick and your text-size choice. That information stays on your device and is never sent to us or anyone else.
Storage the site needs to work
These items are stored in your browser's local storage. They are not cookies, they are not shared, and they do not track you across other websites.
| Name | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| steady-steps:(guide name) | Remembers which steps you ticked in that guide | Until you clear your ticks or your browser data |
| steady-text | Remembers whether you chose larger text | Until you change it or clear your browser data |
| steady-cookie-notice | Remembers that you closed the cookie message, so it does not appear on every page | Until you clear your browser data |
| steady-consent | Remembers whether you accepted or rejected measurement cookies, if you were asked | Until you change it or clear your browser data |
Optional measurement cookies
We may use Google's measurement tag to learn which of our search ads bring readers to useful guides. If it is switched on, it starts in Google Consent Mode with all storage set to "denied". Only if you choose "Accept cookies" may Google set cookies such as these:
| Name | Set by | Purpose | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| _gcl_au | Google Ads | Tells us whether a visit came from one of our ads | About 90 days |
| _ga, _ga_(ID) | Google Analytics | Counts visits and which guides are read, without identifying you | Up to 2 years |
Google's use of this information is described in How Google uses information from sites that use its services (another website).
How to change your choice
- When a measurement tag is active, select Cookie settings at the bottom of any page to change your answer. Rejecting is always as easy as accepting.
- If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as "Reject cookies" and do not ask.
- On any guide, Clear my ticks removes that guide's saved progress.
- To remove everything, clear this site's data in your browser. In Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, select the icon to the left of the web address, then Cookies and site data or Site settings.
